Psst, Apple Cider Vinegar Vitamin C Gummy Recipe at the end of this post!
So recently I’ve been doing a lot of research and getting more concerned about my diet and what I am feeding my children and Husband!
There is SO MUCH information out there that it is overwhelming to take it all in, not to mention find out what is factual, so I thought I would do a post on a few of the ways I have cleaned up our diet!
It may seem really hard at first but I promise it’s not. It’s just a bad habit to go to the grocery store and grab whatever is quickest, and basically whatever packaging looks good. It’s so sad what is being sold and hiding in the food we eat. We have to train ourselves with new and better habits if we want to be healthier and it all starts with our diet!
So new habit number one to form is:
1. READ THE FOOD LABELS
I don’t know about you but I never used to read food labels. If it looked good I picked it up and bought it. When I decided I wanted to start paying attention to what we are actually eating I was shocked at all of the unnecessary additives and sugar in things! Not to mention the names of things I can’t even pronounce and have no clue what they are. Those definitely don’t belong in my children’s bodies!
Some of the things I have started buying different brands of are condiments like Mayo, Mustard, Ketchup and Pesto. Did you know there are brands of Pesto out there that have a ton of junk in them? All Pesto is is oil and herbs! Why the need for added sugar and preservatives?! It’s crazy.
(Yes, I know I could make my own lots of things but being a Mom, if I can find healthier versions that are already made for me then I will buy it instead of making it. I said “easy ways to clean up your diet,” remember?! 😉 )
Have you read the term “Natural Flavors?” Well, do a little research and you’ll find out that the “Natural” in “Natural Flavors” isn’t so natural at all. It’s made in a science lab and is absolutely in no way close to being the actual flavor of whatever it is you are eating. They have also found that it could be a way of getting you addicted to that specific flavor so that way you keep buying whatever it is that isn’t good for you. It’s all about the money, not health.
2. Buy Organic
I know, I know, you’ve heard it a thousand times. It took my Husband a little while to get on board but he finally has and I just feel so much better about knowing that there aren’t all those added chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics in my produce and meat. Now you do have to be careful. There are ways of marketing that like to lie and misguide you so that’s where reading the labels comes in handy since companies like to trick you with their fancy packaging and careful wording.
Still always wash your produce to try to get the most you can off the outside of your fruits and veggies. Even organic growers put things like waxes on them to protect and keep the fruit looking pretty.
When it comes to meat, choose “Grass Fed” and “No Antibiotics or Hormones.” When it comes to processed meats, they aren’t really the best to be eating period. It is hard to avoid them though especially in the summer when camping if you like hot dogs. When choosing things like hot dogs and lunch meat, look for ones with “No Nitrates” and I’ve found the least processed lunch meat to be Boar’s Head Natural.
You may be concerned about price but you have to ask yourself if your family’s health is worth a little more to you? I’m not sure about where you shop, but our organic brand at our store is actually cheaper than most of the other products I look at! Score!
Also, don’t forget to do some research and look for local farmers to support! This is why I like hunting because I know where my food comes from so if you know what farm your food is coming from and how they feed and raise them, that’s way better than store bought food plus it supports your neighbor!
3. Filter Tap Water
I’ve drank tap water all my life but again, with the more research I do I’m finding how unhealthy it is! We as a society seem to be getting more and more unhealthy and we can go into lots of different subjects, studies, and theories about how and why that is happening but I think we can all agree that our diet is primarily the source of our overall health. We could most likely also agree that water is the most important part of our diet too. It’s vital. But what if something so basic as our water is being polluted?!
Fluoride, Chlorine, Lead, Mercury, and more is added to your water. I decided that I no longer want to drink that and give it to my children either so I got this awesome Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher thanks to www.wikibuy.com!
I filled up two glasses of water and gave them to my Husband to drink and he picked the Aquagear cup as the better tasting one. I thought there was no way we would be able to distinguish between the two but boy was I wrong! I mean, we live in Alaska and our water is fresh, clean, glacier water right?! I tasted the filtered water, crisp and clean. Then I tasted our tap Alaska water, it tasted like metal! I couldn’t believe that we had been drinking that gross stuff the city adds into the water this whole time! I just needed clean water to know what I was missing!
4. Try Keto Meals
Now if you know me at all, you know that carbs make me happy and I’m the biggest sweet tooth on the planet! I buy 100% whole grain bread and I will never ever pass up dessert, but every now and then I feel like I need to detox and I start eating everything Keto. I bought a spiralizer and have made zucchini noodles to put in my recipes instead of regular pasta. I’ve made mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes. You know what? It wasn’t bad at all. In fact, I quite liked it! I made a cauliflower crust pizza (that was a disaster, I didn’t get all the water out! haha) but my 4 and 2 year old still loved it! It was more like a casserole than a pizza! It was a good way to get veggies into them! They didn’t know what it was, they just knew that it was yummy! You can also blend in lots of veggies into a pizza sauce as well. Once I master that cauliflower crust our pizza will be full of hidden delicious veggie nutrition!
5. ACV, Lemon Juice, and Vit C. Oh My!
Something else I decided to try was to drink ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) and lemon juice every day. Research says that drinking lemon juice first thing in the morning helps to jump start your metabolism and detox your system. Lemon juice doesn’t have caffeine like coffee does, so I don’t judge you for jumping straight to that wonderful cup of Joe! What I do like to do is drink it with my ACV at night though. I sometimes practice intermittent fasting and I won’t eat supper and have my drink instead. ACV is a bit of a different taste to get used to but it’s many health and gut benefits are definitely worth it! I’ve found that juicing a grapefruit, a lemon, and then 2 TBS of ACV make a pretty tasty drink! Add honey if it’s too sour or bitter for you. I definitely started noticing weight drop off and my skin look better when I stick to that routine plus a Keto diet.
Something new that I am trying with my kiddos is ACV Vitamin C Gummies! I give my kids probiotics but I thought this would be an awesome way to give them some immune boosting and gut health benefits in a fun way! Vitamin C is pretty much awesome sauce when it comes to our immune system! They love helping me make them! I use this recipe (or see the bottom of this post for what I did) and the only difference is I added 2 scoops of Vitamin C powder and some Stevia. I might try some sugar free flavorings to add to them next time!
So that’s it! A few easy changes I’ve made for us and I hope it helps you and your family as well in being more intentional about your health! Blessings!
